Kelsey has always felt most at home in nature and with animals. And she has the talent and passion to bring both to life on canvas, in a unique style that is rich and representational without being realistic.
“I like to combine the gritty texture of charcoal and the vibrant color of watercolors and acrylics” explains Kelsey. “This mixed media process recreates a feeling or internal experience of my subjects rather than their exact physical nature.”
The results are fascinating and intriguing. Her paintings–usually relatively large–tend to make strong emotional connections with those who view them. And while the connections are invariably positive, the meanings vary.
“It's fascinating and slightly mysterious to me that one piece of artwork can be viewed by multiple people and each person can find a different meaning or message in it,” Kelsey says. “To me that's the real magic of art. I love that the creation doesn't stop with me. Each person who appreciates what I've put my hands to gets to finish the creation process in the viewing of it. That sense of mystery is what propels me to share what I do with the world.”
