Abstract Artist
An exhibit of Donna Unger’s paintings is like a world tour in imagination. Her palettes nearly cover the spectrum. Her media and styles vary. If you think you see an occasional flash of Cubism, Expressionism or other modernist movement in her abstract art, you also get the feeling that it’s not derivative. That she got there on her own, that each work is an adventure, and the artist is discovering and exploring a new frontier in vision and technique for herself, for the first time.
“I guess you could call me an abstract experimentalist,” says Donna. “I don’t favor a single style, medium and subject. Each painting has its own unique process. What I love about painting is moving from one experience to the next.”
That spirit of adventure and love for life come through in a bold mixture of different media, palettes, line textures and subject matter. Many of her paintings burst with energy and color–sometimes bold, sometimes brilliant, sometimes with subtle richness. But always striking in presence and masterful in execution.
Although obviously an artist at heart, Donna came late to this show. While raising her three children, she channeled her creative abilities into a career as a beautician. She bred and showed Irish setters and quarter horses. Her youthful enthusiasm for art may be supercharged by the fact that she didn’t start painting seriously until 2000.
And she hasn’t stopped since.
“Art gives me a chance to see things in a different light, with a new awareness and meaning. For me, it is truly a celebration of life.”
Others enjoy sharing in that celebration. Donna is a popular exhibitor in juried, membership and invitational shows around Southeastern and South Central Pennsylvania. Her work has won numerous awards and is included in many private collections.
